The purpose of the Tomando Acción (Taking Action) project was to raise awareness among Spanish-speaking, immigrant women in Florida about domestic violence. These fotonovelas were developed statewide with members of the Hispanic community.
In a 2006 community health assessment, in Lake County Florida's Hispanic community, 49% of the participants stated that domestic violence was a problem in the community and 65% responded that they did not know how to access services for victims of domestic abuse.
Tomando Acción informs Hispanic women about available services:
- Shelter and assistance for victims of abuse
- Legal rights and legal services for immigrant women who are victims of domestic violence
- How to access these services through the use of the toll-free hotline
