The purpose of the Tomando Acción (Taking Action) project was to raise awareness among Spanish-speaking, immigrant women in Florida about domestic violence. These fotonovelas were developed statewide with members of the Hispanic community.

In a 2006 community health assessment, in Lake County Florida's Hispanic community, 49% of the participants stated that domestic violence was a problem in the community and 65% responded that they did not know how to access services for victims of domestic abuse.[1]

Tomando Acción informs Hispanic women about available services:

  1. Shelter and assistance for victims of abuse
  2. Legal rights and legal services for immigrant women who are victims of domestic violence
  3. How to access these services through the use of the toll-free hotline
