The Human Rights Coalition of Alachua County is a group of community activists and organizers who are committed to local, tangible solutions. We believe that it is possible to achieve profound outcomes using ordinary means such as community empowerment and local partnerships.
Our mission is to cultivate safety and empowerment for immigrant families and individuals in North Central Florida by working with the immigrant community to build knowledge and self-sufficiency through community education, tangible services, advocacy, and strengthening community connections.
We envision a world in which all people, regardless of nationality or national origin can live with dignity. We believe that everyone has a right to safety, a right to thrive, and a right to simply exist.
The HRC ID provides card holders with a reliable form of identification that can be used as a tool by law enforcement, city departments, health centers, schools, businesses, and cultural arts organizations to better identify, serve, and protect us.
Immigration accompaniment involves providing support and assistance to individuals navigating the immigration process, particularly those facing challenges such as detention, deportation, or asylum proceedings.
Our trained legal navigator, can provide information and orientation about how legal systems work and individual rights and responsibilities within those systems. She is available to assist immigrant clients negotiating the criminal, immigration, and civil legal systems and provide emotional support.
The HRC Community ID is an alternate means of identification, useful because of the local relationships which underly it. The ID improves access to essential services, such as healthcare, secure housing, utilities, and education, for those lacking government issued identification. While the HRC Community ID is not a driver’s license and cannot replace a passport, it is accepted by a variety of local entities, including the UFHealth/Shands hospital network, the Gainesville Police Department, the Alachua County Sheriff, local shelters, the Alachua County Library System, and various local banks, among others. The wide range of accepting entities means that community members who are not eligible or do not have the funds to obtain a driver’s license or state ID can still have a verifiable form of identification which demonstrates their local residence.
In order to receive an HRC Community ID, you need to provide valid proof of identity, address, and age.
For proof of identity, the best document to bring is a passport (valid or expired), a driver’s license (valid or expired), or a foreign national ID card.
For proof of address, the best document to bring is a utility bill, lease, bank statement, medical bill, or driver’s license.
For proof of age, the best document to bring is a passport (valid or expired) or birth certificate.
And don’t forget – $10 (cash or PayPal)
